In a summer with fun community events spread all over the city, one Lancaster location stands out as a place to meet, eat, and learn new, unexpected skills. 

West Art, the multi-use space on the corner of Buchanan and College Avenue offers a wide array of events every week, for all ages and all experience levels. What used to be a church turned into a vision of community for owners Rufus Deakin and Josh Gibbel. The two dreamed of opening a “living room” for the whole neighborhood, and more than a year later it’s safe to say that they succeeded.

West Art is truly a place for everyone. By day, guests can hang out in the Art Bar, sipping hand crafted coffees while working, reading, or relaxing. There are also weekly morning yoga classes and kids clubs, encouraging people to try out new hobbies on a donation basis. 

Later in the day, the cozy coffee bar/workspace transforms itself. The lights begin to dim, the music shifts, and suddenly the baristas have become bartenders, ready to serve you a delicious cocktail or select beer and wine. 

There is always something on the calendar for evenings at West Art. Chess Club, Film Club, Artist Meetups, and Concerts are just some of the amazing events you could find yourself enjoying on any night of the week. For those looking for a more active evening, there are Wednesday night Yoga and Kickboxing classes, as well as frequent dance lessons for beginners or returning students. 

Painting classes, book clubs, LGBTQ+ socials, and “Green Drinks” a monthly climate discussion, round out West Arts incredible slate of activities you can be a part of. All of these options truly illuminate that this is truly a place for everyone, where you can find a new skill or connect with old friends.

West Art, in a word, is legit. It has quickly become a cornerstone of the community and is a frequent topic of conversation amongst city residents. 

“Hey, have you seen who’s playing West Art on Friday?”

“Wait till you hear what I did at West Art on Wednesday night!” 

With bands coming from states all along the East Coast and comedians hailing from New York City, West Art feels more than just a club on the corner. It has truly become the intersection of all things Lancaster, and beyond.
