Explore with us more of the hidden hiking gems and lesser-known trails that promise to delight anyone looking for a bit of adventure or awe inspiring vistas:
- Clark Nature Preserve: A local favorite, Clark Nature Preserve features several trails, with the House Rock Overlook trail being the standout. This loop trail winds through woodlands and open fields and rewards hikers with commanding views of the countryside. It’s a peaceful haven where you can soak in the beauty of Lancaster County’s rural landscapes. If you like, you can hike all the way to Tucquan Glen and back: around 6 miles total roundtrip.
- Tucquan Glen & Pyfer Nature Preserves: Nestled in the southern end of Lancaster County, Tucquan Glen offers hikers a tranquil escape into nature. This 2.5-mile trail winds alongside the scenic Tucquan Creek and takes you through lush forests, over wooden footbridges, and past enchanting waterfalls. The Glen is renowned for its serenity and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a peaceful hiking experience. At present, the only way to enjoy the Glen is to park at nearby Clark Nature preserve and hike over to it.
- Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve: Just a stone’s throw from Tucquan Glen, Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve boasts a series of interconnected trails across 458 acres offering hikers a diverse range of terrains, from rocky outcrops to tranquil streams. The reward for your efforts? Breathtaking vistas of the Susquehanna River. Be sure to explore the “Pinnacle Overlook Trail” for a spectacular view of the Susquehanna river winding through the valley below.
- Susquehannock State Park: A hidden gem, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors. The grounds are spacious, you can come for the day, have a picnic and enjoy an entire network of trails to explore. The Hawk Point Trail is the highlight, offering a moderately challenging hike that culminates in awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Susquehanna River. The park is also great for birdwatching, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a majestic bald eagle soaring overhead.
- Silver Mine Park: Located in Conestoga, is home to a network of hiking trails that cater to all levels of hikers. As the name suggests, the park was once the site of silver mining, and the ruins of the mines add an extra layer of historical intrigue to your trek. The wooded paths and open meadows are very well maintained and are an excellent spot for a family hike or a leisurely stroll.
- Windolph Landing Nature Preserve: For those in search of a more secluded hiking experience, Windolph Landing Nature Preserve is an undiscovered treasure. Situated along the Conestoga River, this preserve offers a shorter trail that winds through meadows and woodlands. The river views are enchanting, and the solitude is perfect for introspective hikes.

Remember, while exploring these Lancaster County hiking secrets, it’s essential to practice ‘Leave No Trace’ principles: take only memories and leave only footprints to ensure the preservation of these great natural wonders for future generations. So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your water bottle, and embark on an adventure to discover Lancaster County’s hidden hiking gems!
