This week we want to share with you more about the Farm that brings us entertainment, great food, drinks and live music.
You heard that right, a farm that does all this! Kissel Valley Farm is one of a kind right in our backyard. Located at 645 East Oregon Road in Lititz you will find home to this wonderful farm. At the farm you will find a few things from 21 acres that provide the perfect sunset view, to a farmhouse from the 1800s giving you a taste of our rich history. You can also enjoy their vineyard. This is a partnership with Waltz Vineyards where they work to create delicious wines for Lancaster patrons and visitors to enjoy regularly. If you have not already be sure to check out our blog on wineries and vineyards within Lancaster County! While walking around the farm be sure to take in the breathtaking wildlife as they have created a 3 acre wildflower field not only for patrons to enjoy the beauty of the floral colors in bloom but to help rebuild and support the pollination within Lancaster County.

While Kissel Valley Farm provides a variety of breathtaking views, incredible scenery, historic buildings and local partnerships it also works to provide the Lancaster community activities, events and enjoyment all year round. One thing they are known for is the Pop-Up Beer Gardens. In 2019 Kissel Valley Farm partnered with Wyndridge Farm Brewing for their pop-ups; they did it again in 2020…do you think there might be a pop-up partnership this year? One can hope!
The pop-ups were weekends long providing individuals opportunities to get to the event or even go a few times. Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of August and September you could go to Kissel Valley Farm for the free event. When on the farm you had the opportunity to taste and enjoy beers and ciders from Wyndridge as well as amazing food from local food trucks. These pop-ups were great ways to get together with friends, enjoy the outdoors, support the locals, and soak in the last weekends of summer.
If you got to the pop-ups at the right time you might be able to enjoy live music and entertainment from our Lancaster community as well as yard games. If you attended a pop-up beer garden you would see patrons sitting on beach chairs, towels and blankets. You would hear instruments, laughter, and gulps. These weekends were times that brought the Lancaster Community together full of joy and fun. This year the pop-up partnership is with Bulls Head Beer Garden, and…it already started! A video was recently posted about smoothing out the lawn for upcoming beer garden pop-ups with Bulls Head Public House throughout the weekends of May through October, more time to enjoy!
Admissions is five dollars and children 12 and under are free. There will be a rotating mobile beer tap, wine and cocktails too, providing a taste for everyone who attends!
If you are thinking about heading to the garden this weekend or maybe a couple times this summer be sure to bring your admissions fee, something to sit on because picnic tables are limited. Do not bring outside concessions but do support the local businesses, food trucks or catering of the weekend for delicious meals and snacks. Be sure to bring sunscreen as the summer months get closer. It will be getting warmer and stay hydrated with water and lotion to protect yourself!
What seems like a new yearly tradition is one to be sure to make note of, it is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery and time with your friends.
Finding local events in Lancaster is not hard, so many companies and businesses work to bring the community together through food, drinks, entertainment and more. This is one of the many reasons why Lancaster County is truly one of a kind! A space for all to enjoy, where everyone can find things to do, try new places and meet new people. Our County is full of Local Secrets making it a unique and special place to be a part of.

One way we provide tips is through our suggestions of things to do or ways to get involved in Lancaster County, this week we want to share with you more about Chocolate!
Not just any chocolate Wilbur buds chocolate! Founded in 1865 this fan favorite brand has been a Lancaster staple, and a staple for people all over the country and I would even say world! You can buy the chocolate at retailers in the United States and online through their site or mass sites like Amazon too!
Henry Oscar Wilbur’s manufacturing company is in Lititz! Every year millions of pounds of chocolate treats are created for all to enjoy. In 2016 the factory closed, after 125 years of chocolate making production needed an uptick in tools and speed. Cargill’s took over chocolate making in Mount Joy, another location in Lititz, Hazelton and two locations in Canada. If you go to the Wilbur Chocolate Factory in Lititz you can take the museum tour to learn the history of the company while also getting to see how the chocolate is made and antique tools that were used.
Are you curious about homes that are currently on the market, our website is a great spot to start your search!
Wilbur does not just make buds but those are the most popular of the candies made which were introduced in 1893 and talk about a long history of tasty! The buds are named after flower buds because of the way they look and the mold used to create the chocolates are very similar to a real flower bud. Nowadays Wilbur Chocolate has a handful of products for patrons to enjoy. With the classic buds there are also chocolate covered fruits, nuts and more, cocoa, chocolate chips and even coffee!
While the taste of these sweet treats will clearly show you how this company has been a treasured treat of so many for such a long time another reason I think they are successful is the Cargill Cocoa Promise that they have. The company has a commitment to using and working with sustainable cocoa farming, focusing on community impact! A way to know that your purchase is helping communities is looking for the UTZ Certified logo or a marking that says The Cargill Cocoa Promise. When you buy a product like this you are helping sustain the cocoa farming. The Wilbur company works to provide the farmers with education and skills through training programs, schools for children, health care and nutritional guidance support for the Cocoa communities.
While you can buy products online through Wilbur’s site, commercial sites and at some commercial stores I suggest going to the Wilbur Chocolate Retail Store to shop around. Located at 45 North Broad Street in Lititz. You can shop around Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm giving you so much time to peruse the chocolatey treats. Due to Covid the retail shop has changed their daily shopping to meet the guidelines and regulations while also giving multiple options for their patrons to shop comfortably from offering curbside pick-up, to 30 minute sanitizing shifts. When you are wanting to use the curbside option you can call ahead to order your treats so that they are ready for you when you pull up. Ready to take home your tasty treats and gifts? Sometimes stocking up during your shopping spree you will need to know how to properly store the chocolate so that it does not go to waste. Chocolate from Wilbur should be stored at temperatures around 65 degrees Farengeitte and not go over 70 degrees. If it does go to 70 degrees you may be reducing the shelf life of you goodies. If you are storing properly these treats could have a shelf life from nine to eighteen months depending on the products you picked up.
If you are a baker or wanting to improve your baking skills Wilbur is a perfect stop for creating delicious chocolate treats. You can purchase products from the retail store that you can bake with such as cocoa butter bases and confectionery products. Check out their website section titled working with chocolate for all the tips and tricks you would need to make a delicious dessert for your next family birthday or backyard barbeque !
If you have never tried a chocolate treat from Wilbur let me tell you…you are missing out! Wilbur is a great gift idea for friends and loved ones too. If you have a friend or family member that is a new home buyer maybe you get them Wilbur coffee and a set of mugs or some buds with tulip buds for their garden. The options to mix and match these sweet treats with a home decor gift are millions. Or if you are looking for a day out and want to dive into another piece of Lancaster History head over to the old Wilbur Factory for a Museum tour, it will not disappoint. Seeing the history of chocolate making is truly fascinating.
While the buds are a classic and come in milk, dark and semi-sweet flavors Wilbur has so much more to offer. A fan favorite are their English Toffee dipped chocolates, chocolate covered peanut butter ritz crackers, chocolate covered oreos and Lititz sweet/salty bark. What is your go to Wilbur order?

Realize your pup was not on their best behavior at the park? Or maybe you saw a dog so well trained you are questioning if you should teach your furry love some new tactics? Look no further than The Zen Dog Den. The business is run by certified dog trainer Cherisse Feddock plus two other fabulous behavioral trainers Stacey Samii and Kelcy Waller. Everyone works as a team to help families achieve peace and happiness with their dogs inside and outside the home. The dog trainer Cherisse has been working with four legged friends as a foster pet parent, walker, educator, and trainer while also promoting pet adoption. The team has years of experience and expertise to help you and your pup be the best they can be! Cherisse has also worked with trainers across the world such as Cesar Millan.
The approach of the Zen Dog Den is to not only train but train by focusing on behavioral, instinctual and primal approaches which is truly remarkable and creates a different experience for the dog as well as the owner long after they have completed the program. Owners learn to truly understand their four legged family and build on methods that can be practiced in multiple settings. Through the work of the trainers, you and your family will be forever grateful as you learn and adapt to understand and connect with your pup. There are multiple types of services and training you can request from refreshers to a brand new owner. All of the training is done in-home so it is personal and convenient for clients, not to mention that most of the unwanted behavior occurs in the home in the first place.
Something that is a crowd favorite is the Zen Dog Pack Walks at the Overlook Park. This is an opportunity for clients to practice what they learned in the program and see what kind of pup they have within a pack of other dogs and humans. The best part is that the Pack Walks are free of charge and do not require RSVP! The trainers are available during the walks to answer questions. If you are interested in learning more, request a session or contact the Zen Dog Den today. The work that Cherisse, Stacey, and Kelcy does is remarkable and I am sure you will be talking about it for years to come! In fact, the Zen Dog Den offers clients a lifetime of support for their beloved dogs and families. Even after training is over, clients may reach out by text, phone call, or email for any reason with no cost. Having a pup of my own that has worked with the Zen Dog Den, I have nothing but great things to say. Cherisse has incredible talent and has helped us learn about our puppy while also helping her build up and learn great training techniques.

The last spot I would like to share is Mean Cup located in the Lancaster Central Market as well as at 398 Harrisburg Avenue. Mean Cup offers coffee, teas, cold drinks, espresso, mochas and light grab and go options of sandwiches, salads and delicious baked goods. They partner with the Goodie Shoppe and Amaranth Bakery for their sweets. Mean Cup has options for you to substitute your milk to meet your needs from soy, almond and half/half. The relaxing atmosphere that cafes, bakeries and coffee shops provide make them truly the best place for a work meeting, a catch up with some friends or a place to enjoy some time by yourself with a good book! A great way to support local is not only visiting these spaces but liking their social media accounts, leaving them great reviews and purchasing things like coffee beans to use at home. Local coffee shops sometimes offer loyalty or reward programs, so if you find one that is your new favorite be sure to be on the lookout for a punch card or app to download. Do you have a favorite spot to grab a quick cup that is not listed? Let me know I would love to go and try it! There are so many incredible places across Lancaster County it is one of the fun parts of living here you always find somewhere new doing something great!
Thanks for checking out this week’s Lancaster Local Secret, did you know in Pennsylvania a fan favorite is a whoopie pie which is 2 cake like pieces with cream filling in the middle? There are SO many different flavors! Have a great week!

With Valentine’s day behind us and the month of love coming to an end, who’s to say it needs to stop? Let’s continue to show some love to Lancaster County by shopping local and enjoying some great meals while we are at it! An easy family and friend crowd pleaser has always been pizza. You can get it delivered, add fun topping and have a little clean up. This week I want to share with you ten great places to enjoy a slice, or two or a pie within Lancaster County.
Two Cousins Pizza Paradise, is located at 3099 Lincoln Hwy E. in Paradise. They recently opened an online ordering system where you can place an order from your computer or phone! Their ingredients are sourced from local farmers markets providing each person truly a fresh pizza! They offer two types of pizza with a lot of fun options of toppings. The first type of pizzas are traditional pizzas that consist of traditional pizza cheese, homemade dough and their pizza sauce (of course with options for tasty toppings too). The second option is one of their specialty pizzas, these are ten pizzas all unique flavors with creative toppings. They range anywhere from taco pizza to a farmers delight pie. Check out their website for all the delicious options!
The second pizzeria I would like to highlight is Slugger’s Pizzeria, they are located at 701 N. Queen Street in Lancaster. What is great about their pizzeria is that they are open everyday and walking distance from the Clipper Magazine Stadium. Talk about the perfect place for a pre-game slice! You can get a slice from the pizzeria for less than three dollars as you walk to a game or order a whole pie for your family on your way home from work. Their menu has eight specialty pizzas from a veggie extreme to the slugger. Each specialty pie comes in the large sixteen inch size, great to share with your loved ones!
Rosario’s Pronto Pizza & Italian Restaurant is located at 289 West Main Street in Leola. While they also have a restaurant I will just be sharing their pizzas with you today. They offer customers a variety of pizza pie options in a variety of sizes twelve, fourteen and sixteen inches or their party pizza of twenty four inches! While they have twelve speciality pizzas from ranch romano to hawaiian pizza they also have a crowd pleaser of thick sicilian pies…this is a great way to enjoy pizza!
Today’s Pizza is located in Mount Joy at 933 East Main Street. Open and run by the Roman Family which opened in May 2019. As a newer establishment they have jumped right in creating a space of community and support through hosting fundraisers where they have been able to help the Milanof-Schock Library and Donegal High School. Talk about using your space for good! This pizzeria offers a variety of specialty pizzas from the classic Margherita or Meat Lover to a unique spaghetti pie! They also have gluten free pizza options for those who need or would like and daily deals. Check out their online ordering system for more tasty options!
Roma Pizza is located at 54 East Main Street in Lititz. While you can enjoy a delicious slice of pizza you also have the option to enjoy a pie or two. One type of pizza pie that is creative are their stuffed pizzas. Their grandma style pizzas bring a taste of childhood to your home if you grew up with a grandmother that enjoyed making pizzas when you would come over. Their online ordering on their website makes it easy for you to place an order for takeout or delivery because they accept not only credit cards but apple pay, paypal and venmo…talk about convenience!
The next spot for great pizza is not found at a pizzeria or an italian restaurant it is found at Root’s Country Market and Auction in Manheim! Norma’s Pizza is made with fresh dough that melts in your mouth…so good! The pizza can be bought by the pie or by the slice. It is a great way to enjoy lunch as you roam through the market! Norma knows the market well and she and her husband used to run the Knepp’s Caramel Corn stand at Roots which had been in his family for years when he became too ill to help with the stand they had to sell it. After selling that stand she started the pizza stand and it has been a hit! If you are looking to order a pizza pie be sure to check out her facebook page because orders need to be placed in advance, you cannot get a pie day of. You cannot go wrong with her plain pie the sauce and cheese are top notch and when it comes right out of the oven there is nothing better!
Luca Lancaster is located at 436 West James Street. Their pizzas are Neapolitan inspired and boy can you tell! They use a wood-burning hearth & Neapolitan oven. Luca has been communicating with their patrons regularly about what they can offer and provide each customer to ensure safety by having the first page of their menu be information about reservations, car pick up and their at home kits. They offer five different pizzas each mixed with wonderful ingredients and delicious dough you might just have to order all five pies to enjoy with your family! From the classic Margherita to a Piccante pie that includes hot honey…you can’t go wrong with any or all of the five!
Parma Pizza and Grill can be found at 301 Main Street in Landisville. This location has been open since 2005 and they have created a space where old school pizza comes to Lancaster! They offer traditional pizzas, their specialty pizzas, stuffed pizzas and bavarian style stuffed pizzas…talk about a variety. Bavarian stuffed sounds like the pretzel we all know because that is exactly it. Their Bavarian stuffed pizza is a pretzel crust bringing salty a creative way to enjoy pizza.
The next pizzeria to highlight is Espino’s Pizza Pastas & Subs located in Lancaster at 323 West Lemon Street. You can enjoy their cheese pie at any size from twelve inches all the way up to thirty two! Everyone can enjoy a slice when you can get a pizza pie that big! Espino’s also offers a handful of specialty pizzas as well as Sicilian pizza…yum!
The last pizzeria I want to share is Steel Peel Pennsylvania Pizza Company they are located in Lancaster at 611 Harrisburg Avenue. They offer a gluten free crust option, and toppings based on the type of pie you get. Neapolitan or Sicilian while you can enjoy those classic pizzas you can also make it your own with their fun variety of toppings for each! Steel Peel offers a variety of stellar specialty pies with options for flat, stuffed or counter style stuffed (try it!). With over a dozen specialty pies you are going to want to keep coming back to steel to try them all!
Each of these pizzeria’s offer a variety of other options from sandwiches and salads to pasta dishes. They are also providing either delivery options, or contactless pick up, be sure to check out each website to learn specifics on how they are accommodating patrons to stay safe. Some of the pizzerias offer daily deals and coupons that you can use at check out too! While these are not the only pizza places in Lancaster, be sure to find some spots on your own and let me know if there are more I should try! As you look to the week’s ahead and decide what is for dinner, why not give one of our local pizza spots a try! Support local while enjoying a great meal with family or friends. Maybe have a family or friend pizza party in the coming weeks and get a pie from multiple places and then have everyone rank their favorites to find your crowd pleaser! Taking a pizza’s Lancaster’s heart one bite at a time. Let me know if you try one of these spots or if you find another in Lancaster that I should check out!

It is our favorite time of year again…the annual Lititz Fire & Ice Festival would be right around the corner. What we typically look forward to and know is a time with ice sculptures, great food, live fire show, breathtaking art, block party, an awesome chili competition and the Lititz Lions Carnival & vender fair. While the Lititz Fire & Ice Festival is not happening this year it will be back in February 2022. But that doesn’t go without some celebration this year!
Though we will not have our favorite chili cookoff, fire show, carnival or block party festivities we WILL be able to experience the remarkable ice sculptures! Lititz Fire & Ice Festival is revamped to the Lititz Ice Walk for 2021. From February 12th until February 20th you can walk through the streets to see the sculptures. Each day more will be added so this does not have to be a one day walk you can go to Littiz multiple times to see what has been added! This is a great way to get the family outside and moving after the past few cold snow storms we have had while getting a taste of one of our favorite Lancaster County winter traditions.
Venture Lititz has thought of everything making sure we are all kept safe, this event is all outside, there will be no live carvings, and people are required to be masked and stay socially distant. By adding extra days to the event this is a way they are working to help spread out the crowds as well. It truly is magnificent that during this time the committee and organizers thought to figure out a way for us all to have a little cheer and taste of our Lancaster!
The ice sculptures will be located on North, South and Broad street. There are going to be twenty six ice sculptures put out on just one day! Then in the following days another fifteen sculptures and twenty two…that is over sixty plus ice sculptures to enjoy and truly marvel at. What is wonderful is that like the Lititz Fire & Ice Festival the Lititz Ice Walk is also sponsored by local businesses and organizations. Some of the ice sculptures are in front of local shops and businesses. This is a great way to pop into the shops and get a valentine gift for someone you love or a birthday gift! Attending this event is a great way to support our local businesses while enjoying the artwork of so many! Consider getting a hot chocolate or order takeout for when you finish your walk for a great meal after with your family.
So over the next few days plan a night, an afternoon or two or three to get over to downtown Lititz, you will not want to miss the incredible artwork of the ice sculptures or a little taste of our favorite festival. Bundle up with some warm clothing, look up some of the shops and local buisnesses that are sponsoring the event, check out some restuarant menus in Lititz and have yourself a day! Get out into the town and enjoy the fresh air while getting a piece of our favorite tradition and opportunity to help buisnesses in the local area by enjoying a treat or two and shopping for your loved ones. Thank you to all that worked so hard to bring us a version of our Lititz Fire & Ice Festival. We look forward to when we can all be back together enjoying the festivities like in years past!
Thanks for checking out this week’s Lancaster Local Secret, did you know in Pennsylvania many call pickled vegetables Chow Chow? Have a great week!

What is absolutely wonderful about where we live is all that Lancaster has to offer. There truly is something for everyone be it movies and plays, cuisine and restaurants, clothing and shops or activities! A unique feature of Lancaster County is the wolf sanctuary, a space for wolves to seek refuge for treatment cultivating a life that is protected will provide the space for natural instincts and growth to occur. What is unique about a sanctuary is animals that go to these will spend the rest of their lives in that space.
Lancaster County holds one of these incredible spaces, located in Lititz at 465 Speedwell Forge Road. The Wolf Sanctuary of PA is located on over 80 acres of natural land to provide the wolves a terrain identical to the wild they would be roaming. This sanctuary is run by the Darlington family and has been for over 40 years. Within the sanctuary you will find not only gray wolves but wolf-dogs as well which are just as the name states a mix of a domestic dog and wolf such as gray, eastern, red or Ethiopian. This space started as a private rescue but now is an educational space where patrons can learn all about wolves, their habitat, history, and so much more!
The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is currently home to over 60 wolves each with their own unique personality, fur coat, and ways of life. The sanctuary does an incredible job to bring to light each of the wolves personalities through detailed biographies on their website as well as wonderful photos and videos. This sanctuary is a 501 c3 nonprofit where you can fully immerse yourself in the life of these wolves through their virtual videos or through an in person visit. Visits are done through tours where you follow a walking trail through the acres of land being able to witness the life of the wolves inside. It is suggested that proper walking shoes are worn as well as attire, being outside it is important that you dress accordingly to ensure you are comfortable. While exploring the sanctuary you are allowed to take photographs but lenses cannot be longer than 5 inches, you cannot take videos or use tripods, selfie sticks or monopods. It is important when attending a tour you follow the guidance of your tour guide this ensures the safety of yourself, those around you, and these magnificent creatures. It is important to note that during the tours you are going to be walking pack to pack around the acres of the sanctuary and will be following the tour guide taking time to pause and learn about each wolf.

Being a volunteer is a wonderful way to get involved in the local community, help a nonprofit and experience a strong work environment where you will build many skills in a unique atmosphere! Talk about an incredible experience…unique and making a difference for our wildlife.
After a visit to the sanctuary if you have fallen in love with one of the many wolves you can participate in the Adopt a Wolf program. These are symbolic adoptions where you can help to provide care for a wolf. Through a payment you can receive the adoption package which holds a personalized adoption certificate, 4×6 professional photo of your wolf, a detailed letter about the wolf, a detailed letter from sanctuary founders and a fact sheet about wolves.
