With the holidays right around the corner (can you believe it?!), you might begin thinking of ways to give back to the community.  Continue reading to find ways to give back to Lancaster this holiday season!

Giving back to your community can look like many things: you can volunteer your time at the food bank or animal shelter, donate canned food or clothes, or simply a monetary donation to a fund that is special to you. The point of it all is to just say thank you to your community for providing you so much every single day!

Ten years ago, Lancaster county made the idea of “giving back” to the community a huge celebration. Usually held the Friday before Thanksgiving is THE EXTRAORDINARY GIVE ~ Lancaster’s largest day of giving! This day is dedicated to raising funds and donations for small businesses in our town.  You, too, can join the thousands of people who support Lancaster organizations on this special day of giving!

In the ten years since it began, this incredible event has raised more than $63 million for regional organizations in Lancaster county. The list of participating businesses is HUGE. There are hundreds of choices to choose from, all in different industries! Aaron’s Acres, A Week Away Foundation, Manheim Township Library, and Columbia Food Network are just a few options.

This year, the EXTRAORDINARY GIVE is being held on November 19. Mark your calendars!!! It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

*Remember, no donation is too big or too small. Even if you don’t donate on this day, supporting local businesses is always a wonderful idea, and we have so many great ones to choose from!

The Best Amish Bakeries in Lancaster, PA

In my opinion, you haven’t truly lived in Lancaster, PA until you’ve visited an Amish bakery. Okay, okay…. If you haven’t at least TRIED an Amish goodie, you are really missing out! My daughter – who was born and raised here – recently informed me that she had never had shoofly pie. We made it a mission to explore Amish Country and find the most delightful treats, which we could share with you!

Below is the list of Amish bakeries we’ve tried out, broken down by town.

Cake and Cup Bake Shoppe – 12 W. Newport Road, Lititz

  • Adorable cakes and cookies that taste even better than they look. Also a great place to go for a cup of coffee with friends as they have an incredible espresso bar. If you’re sticking with the “Amish” theme, their take on whoopie pies is outstanding. They use Wilbur’s cocoa (our chocolate factory in Lititz)! How cool!?!

Achenbach’s Pastries, Inc – 375 E. Main St, Ephrata

  • WOW!! Put this at the top of your list! This is the “home of the long john” and if you are a fellow donut lover, you will love this place as much as we do! It’s been a Lancaster staple for over 67 years…you know it has to be amazing then!

Scratch Bakes – 3 West Main Street, Ephrata

  • Your typical Hallmark-movie bakery. This is a must! The food goes beyond baked goods here. They offer an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch and snack items! But before you go, be sure to check out their list of specialty flavors which rotate weekly. We plan to go back for the Pumpkin Spice cupcakes. and BONUS: they recently opened up a downtown Lancaster location!

Katie’s Kitchen – 200 Hartman Bridge Road, Strasburg

  • Now THIS is where you go if you want an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch meal. Mmmmm! Great for breakfast and lunch, but make sure you save room for dessert! They offer an array of Amish desserts from pies, apple dumplings, and rolls, to milkshakes and sundaes. If you’re lucky you may even spot Horse and Buggies in the parking lot.

ROCKIN’ Lititz

Lititz, PA has all the charm and quaintness of a Hallmark movie. A main street lined with mom and pop shops, holiday parades, and even a chocolate factory. But perhaps one of the coolest and most unique parts of Lititz is Rock Lititz.

So what is Rock Lititz? It’s a one-stop-shop for all things in the live event industry. From design, engineering, manufacturing, rehearsals, they essential create the stages and sets for concerts…and probably for some of your favorite performers.

In 2012, three Lancaster companies combined forces and went out on a limb buying a farm in Lititz to turn it into a large-scale rock performance campus. The goal of this organization is to have a full concert venue-like space to plan concerts without the added pressure of having spectators. It makes the process of designing stages and rehearsing concerts much more enjoyable and relaxed for performers.

Big names such as Taylor Swift, U2, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande come to visit and work with the crew at Rock Lititz. The Rolling Stones, Mumford and Sons, Usher, Billy Joel, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, Bon Jovi, Beyonce… these major stars all have been spotted in our little old town! Many of them comment that they love coming to Lititz because there is no media, no promotional appearances – just a peaceful, quiet place to be creative.

Unfortunately, we never know who is in town until they leave – visitors are kept very hush hush. So, while you aren’t guaranteed to run into Elton John while visiting Lititz, you are welcome to visit the Rock Lititz campus at any time!

It is 96 acres and expanding like crazy. There is a hotel (where the celebrities stay – but you can too!), a magnificent restaurant called Per Diem, a brewery called Fetish, and a flex workspace called Rock Candy.  The performance area is referred to as “The Cube”, and quite literally looks like a huge black box rising from the cornfields.  You could spend a whole day just exploring the grounds. And who knows, maybe you’ll have a celebrity spotting!
